Youth Section

Hockey is an exciting, fun sport and is very popular with many young people, especially since our national team's success of a silver medal at the Hockey World Cup in London in 2018 and at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Ashton Hockey Club welcomes you to the Youth Hockey section of our club. Our thriving Youth Hockey section caters for both girls and boys, from age 7 up to the age of 15.

We offer learning and playing opportunities for all levels of hockey playing ability and a proven pathway to progress to Senior Club Hockey and beyond. Previous Junior Hockey players have subsequently went on to represent our club on Ireland Hockey teams from U16 to Senior Level.

Our aim is to ensure that all our young members have fun, take part, make new friends and enjoy the lifelong benefits of being active in sport; while developing their hockey playing skills in a friendly, social and competitive sporting environment.

Ashton Hockey Club has a proud tradition of developing players from an early age.  The Club relies heavily on the contribution of past and present players in the coaching structures. Building on a strong base over the previous twenty years, in 2005 the Club identified the need to set out a development plan that would have a player focus and so started a significant development in youth structure which has been developed today into an outstanding example of youth sport enjoyment.

Starting at age 7 players are coached by qualified coaches and youth leaders in a stuctured enviornment. Parents are invited to remain to observe the practice sessions and discuss any suggestions or concerns with the coaches or development officers.

In recent years we have invested heavily in structuring our underage section and making sure we have progression plans capable of developing players to play in league sides. We have ensured our coaching staff are aware of the needs for identification of player talent and we have progressed many players through to provincial representation in both boys and girls hockey.

Ashton Hockey Club provides a high level of goalkeeper training in our youth section through our highly experienced Senior Hockey goalkeepers and goalkeeping coaches. Goalkeeper training is available to club members of all ages. Some of our youngest goalkeepers have started training from the age of 10.

The players are our future club, provincial and international players.  Ashton Hockey Club provides qualified coaches to allow the development of these young players for the future.  Registration is done on an annual basis and existing players and children of club adult members are offered places first and thereafter additional family members of existing players are offered.  Once this is complete new members are taken on a first come first served basis within each age group until the groups are fully subscribed.

Each year our youths participate in hockey blitz, cup or league competitions at club level for boys and girls at various locatons throughout Munster. Parental support has been fantastic for each event and we hope this continues.  If parents are in a position to help on any given Blitz day please let the organising coach know.

Several youth players have gone on to represent Munster and Ireland either as players or coaches and most remain as part of the current playing panel in the club.
